In the history of visual arts, Art Deco represented a style of design that combined traditional craftsmanship with the machine age. It had an unmistakable influence on many areas of art and design and was fashionable for a short while from the late 20s to the early 30s, particularly in the United States. It is said that the Art Deco style was modeled on the architecture of buildings of ancient Egypt. Art Deco began in the US around the time of WWI, but continued during the 30s, yet became a very popular style from the 20s to the 30s.
One distinguishing feature to this period was a tendency towards experimentation and its explicit expression, even when dealing with traditional or classical subjects. Emphasis was placed on the need of the Schmuckstück and its possible variations, as well as the use of innovative materials. This is particularly noticeable in the posters that were produced in order to advertise films during the postwar period. In other countries the new fashion gained ground later. In the United States, for example, graphic vocabulary in posters was relatively stable; in France, art moderne posters of the 1920s were still very much in the minds of the graphic designers when art déco posters emerged in the 30’s, and in Russia, the art moderne style survived much longer. During this period the drive to design posters with flat color and simple images had replaced the illustrative style.
